Environmental engineer and data scientist working in the global water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector. Open Science Specialist at ETH Zurich, where I help researchers make their work reproducible and their data open. I founded and lead openwashdata, teach data science with R, and write and manage the grants that fund this work.
At ETH Zurich’s Global Health Engineering group I founded and lead openwashdata, a global community that publishes WASH-sector data as documented, FAIR R packages. I wrote and manage a portfolio of ETH Board Open Research Data grants behind this work, and in 2024 openwashdata received the National Prize for Open Research Data. I am a data steward in ETH’s Data Stewardship Network and the local node leader for the Swiss Reproducibility Network at ETH.
I also teach data science with R and Quarto, from graduate courses at ETH Zurich and CU Boulder to free online cohorts (ds4owd) reaching hundreds of participants worldwide, and I build the R tooling (washr, fairenough, jmpwashdata) that makes open data easier to publish. My background is in environmental and hygiene engineering, with field research on city-wide sanitation and faecal sludge management across Uganda, Tanzania, Vietnam, Bangladesh, India, Bhutan, Haiti and South Africa.
